The calcium carbonate and fossils are recrystallised into crystals of calcite. The temperatures and pressures usually destroy any fossils that may have been present in the Limestone. Other minerals that are present change into new minerals, which give the marble its colour and veining. The word marble is derived from the Greek word “Marmaros” meaning shining stone. Scratch resistanceMarble is a relatively soft material due to its composition; it rates at between 3 and 4 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It can scratch quite easily therefore care is needed in its application. Can it withstand heat?Marble can tolerate heat but very hot pots could score the surface so we recommend placing a trivet or hot pad down first. CleaningMarble is a porous material so we recommend the application of a penetrating sealer. Heritage Stone can also supply specialized cleaners and sealers that will not harm or alter the surface. We do not recommend using abrasive cleaners or scourer pads as this will harm the surface. If you have a stain or mark in your marble contact Heritage Stone for advice Why choose Marble?Marble is easily maintained with the proper products and methods. It is an ascetically pleasing product with warm to bold tones. No two pieces are the same each piece has its own unique character.
