Limestone/Travertine

Limestone is a sedimentary rock made up of mineral calcite derived from evaporated seabeds and lakes and marine organisms. Limestone is ordinarily white but may be coloured by impurities, iron oxide making it brown, yellow or red and carbon making it blue, black, or grey.

Most Limestones are biogenic (contain fossil material) a few originate in chemical precipitation from solution i.e. Travertine.

Travertine is a banded compact variation of limestone formed along streams particularly where there are waterfalls and around hot, cold springs.
Limestone will react to acids, therefore wine; carbonated drinks, fruit juices, and vinegar will affect the stone.

Scratch resistance

Limestone is a relatively soft material due to its composition; it rates at between 3 and 4 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
It can scratch quite easily therefore care is needed in its application.

Can it withstand heat?

Limestone can tolerate heat but very hot pots could score the surface so we recommend placing a trivet or hot pad down first.

Cleaning

Limestone is a porous material so we recommend the application of a penetrating sealer. Heritage Stone can also supply specialized cleaners and sealers that will not harm or alter the surface. We do not recommend using abrasive cleaners or scourer pads, as this will harm the surface. If you have a stain or mark in your Limestone contact Heritage Stone for advice

Why choose Limestone?

Limestone is easily maintained with the proper products and methods. It is an ascetically pleasing product with warm tones.
